Mobile mapping has established itself as a pioneering technology in infrastructure documentation in pipeline construction, particularly in the telecommunications sector. Civil engineering companies use this method to efficiently record routes and create digital models for various project phases. From the preservation of evidence to photo documentation and invoicing, mobile mapping can make the construction process in smart cities precise and cost-efficient.

Advantages of mobile mapping

Efficient data collection is made possible by the interaction between field and office staff. Compared to traditional, stationary surveying methods, large areas can be mapped in a short space of time, saving both time and money. Modern mobile mapping systems achieve accuracies in the centimeter range, which makes them ideal for complex civil engineering projects. High-precision GNSS rovers are used here, which utilize the Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) method to ensure a high level of positioning accuracy.

The direct monitoring and open trench recordings open up new possibilities for quality assurance during construction. A dashboard makes it possible to view the trench at any time, even afterwards. In addition, the display of the detailed inspection and the construction quantities by calendar week help with billing the client and contractor.

The rapid processing of the large volumes of data means that travel distances and resources can be saved on site and colleagues can be supported in the office in the meantime. The next step is to redress the route, carry out digital re-measurement work, evaluate the images and document the damage. The time-consuming work involved in creating measurements can also be carried out by digitally evaluating the quantities of the data to match the bill of quantities with the corresponding sketch.

Areas of application for mobile mapping

Mobile Mapping findet in zahlreichen Bereichen Anwendung. Unter anderem beim Ausbau von Glasfasernetzen oder im Energie- und Rohrleitungsbau ermöglicht Mobile Mapping eine präzise Dokumentation bestehender Infrastrukturen und eine optimale Planung neuer Trassen.

Mobile mapping is used in numerous areas. For example, in the expansion of fiber optic networks or in energy and pipeline construction, mobile mapping enables precise documentation of existing infrastructures and optimal planning of new routes.

Universities and research institutions also use mobile mapping in geodesy, cartography and geoinformatics to develop advanced analysis methods and models. The combination of LiDAR and photogrammetry is used in environmental research, for example, to document landscape changes and conduct ecological studies.

Challenges and future prospects

Despite the many advantages, users of mobile mapping also face a number of challenges, particularly with regard to the large volumes of data that need to be processed and interpreted. This is where the “geomapix” platform offers an efficient and comprehensive solution.

Among other things, the platform offers centralized data management, quality assurance and interfaces to related documentation tools. Since special expertise is required to interpret the data, geomapix has developed functions to support the respective experts from the companies in handling the data.

The future of mobile mapping is promising. With the further development of sensors and algorithms, the technology will also become even more precise and faster. In particular, the use of artificial intelligence to automatically analyze and interpret data opens up new possibilities. In the future, automated systems could be used to detect road damage or monitor construction projects.

In summary, mobile mapping is a key technology for modern geodata processing. Companies such as GEO DATA GmbH are driving this development forward and demonstrating how the technology can be used effectively in practice. As technology continues to develop and become more widely used, mobile mapping will play an even more central role in infrastructure planning and monitoring in the coming years.
