A review of the leading trade fair for Smart City and Smart Region.

The Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) 2024 took place in Barcelona from November 5 to 7 and once again brought together leading experts, innovators and decision-makers from around the world to discuss the future of urban development.

The trade fair, which is considered the world’s most influential event for urban innovation, offered a platform for the exchange of ideas, networking and international collaboration. Johannes Röder and Georg Würffel also set off for Barcelona under this premise. Our Interreg project “PilotInnCities” and the support of delegations from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the Eurotowns network were part of our luggage. We were particularly pleased that our partners from the Czech Republic followed our advice and were able to organize their own highly successful joint stand at the trade fair. In this regard, we would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate them on winning the prize for the most sustainable stand in 2024!

The fair once again attracted a large number of participants, including leading international companies, start-ups and high-ranking representatives from cities and countries around the world. The diversity of participants reflected the global importance of the event and provided numerous opportunities for exchange and collaboration, which ZDE once again used to identify trends for its own work and bring back for its own projects.

Other highlights were:

  1. The exciting opening ceremony: The event began with an inspiring opening speech by Ugo Valenti and Maria Tsavachidis, who emphasized the importance of innovation and transformation for the cities of the future.
  2. Smart Cities Via Satellite: In the session dealing with the role of satellite technology in the development of smart cities, we discussed the challenges and opportunities of the technology for rural and remote areas.
  3. Exchange with mayors from Slovakia on the topic of how smart cities can be implemented more quickly through pilot projects and what this means.
  4. In-depth exchange with various EU projects such as Scalable Cities, Eurotowns, CommuniCity and other partners such as the EU Smart Cities Marketplace at the European Commission stand.
  5. Our consortium meeting at the fair and in the evening in one of the best tapas bars, the Bormuth, exchanging impressions and discussing new projects.

ZDE conclusion

The Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 was a key event for our work, showcasing the latest developments and trends in the field of urban innovation. We were once again able to bring along a large number of new projects and expand our contacts with various EU projects and EU partners. The fair thus offered a unique opportunity to exchange ideas about the future of our cities in the European and international environment, to jointly develop solutions for a better quality of life and to see examples.

Were you also at the trade fair? What impressions did you gain?
